- Charles, a cryptography enthusiast, had quit his job in a consulting firm in 2013 to start a project called the Bitcoin Education Project. He had also worked at a cryptocurrency-related start-up called Invictus Innovations. He was the founding chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation’s education committee and had also helped establish the Cryptocurrency Research Group in 2013.
- By the end of the year, he had joined the founding team of Ethereum. , a Russian-Canadian programmer and tech entrepreneur, another co-founder of Ethereum, had removed him from Ethereum in 2014 after a dispute over the future course of the platform. Charles was of the view that the platform should be commercial while Vitalik was of the idea that the platform should be kept as a non-profit organization. After his removal from Ethereum, he had taken a 6-month long sabbatical.
- He was later approached by Jeremy Wood, a former colleague at Ethereum, who had approached him to form a new project which was called IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong), an engineering and research company to build cryptocurrencies and blockchains. The company’s primary project had resulted in the development of Cardano, a public blockchain and smart-contract platform.
- In 2017, he and IOHK had sponsored research labs focusing on blockchain technology at the University of Edinburgh, a public research university in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, a national research university located in the Greater Tokyo Area, Japan.
- In 2026, he had launched a blockchain research project at the University of Wyoming, a public land-grant research university in Laramie, Wyoming. The project had involved a contribution of USD 500k to the University of Wyoming to support the development of blockchain technology through the creation of a facility called the UWYO-IOHK Advanced Blockchain and Development Laboratory.
