    Dick Durbin studied at Assumption High School located in East St. Louis and graduated in 1962. He then enrolled at Georgetown University, a private Jesuit research university situated in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the School of Foreign Service in 1966.

    After that, he completed his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969 and was admitted to the Illinois bar later that year.

    1. He was employed at a meatpacking plant when he was in high school.
    2. During his senior year in college, Dick Durbin interned in Senator Paul Douglas’s office as well as worked on Douglas’s unsuccessful 1966 reelection campaign.
    3. It was after Paul Douglas mistakenly called him “Dick” that he decided to adopt the nickname.
    4. He began a law practice in Springfield after graduating from law school.
    5. From 1969 to 1972, he served as legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon and served as legal counsel to the Illinois State Senate Judiciary Committee from 1972 to 1982.
    6. Dick Durbin co-owned the Crow’s Mill Pub in Springfield’s Toronto neighborhood from 1976 to 1981 and later described the venture as a “crash course” in running a business.
    7. He won the Democratic nomination for the 20th congressional district in 1982 and scored a 1,400-vote victory, defeating 22-year incumbent Paul Findley.
    8. He defeated Pat Quinn in 1996 in order to become the Democratic nominee to replace the retiring Senator Paul Simon and faced Republican State Representative Al Salvi in the general election.
    9. As he voted against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, Dick Durbin was barred from receiving communion by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois in 2004. He then responded to the ban by stating that he was accountable to his constituents, even if it meant defying Church teachings.
    10. He was ranked as the most liberal U.S. senator by the National Journal in 2006.
    11. Dick Durbin co-signed a Senate resolution affirming support of a Two-State Solution and opposition to a proposed Israeli annexation of the West Bank in 2019.
    12. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
