She played softball and competed in the shot put and powerlifting as well as won All-America honors in the shot put both at junior college and university, was state champion in 1983 and 1984 as well as set the national record at the junior college level from 1983 to 1990. She also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1988 for shot put with a 56 ft 6¼ in (17.23 m) throw, surpassing the qualifying mark of 55 ft (17 m), and finished 6th. Apart from that, Jones has gained popularity with her roles like Coach Beiste in the musical comedy-drama series Glee, Coach Kelly in the Disney Channel comedy series Lizzie McGuire, Butch Brenda in the teen comedy film Material Girls, Svetlana in the comedy film Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate, Dot in the TNT medical drama series HawthoRNe, and Stella in the soap opera Venice: The Series.
