Gauri Gill is an award-winning Indian photographer whose portfolio features working extensively with marginalized communities, like that of rural Rajasthan. Her work has been celebrated internationally with exhibitions held at prestigious institutions like the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Philadelphia Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the 58th Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum Tinguely in Basel, San Jose Museum of Art, and many more. Furthermore, her collections have been showcased at the Freer and Sackler Galleries of Art at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., Devi Art Foundation in New Delhi, the Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland to name a few.

Gauri graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in Applied Art from the Delhi College of Arts in New Delhi, India. She then attended the Parsons School of Design located in New York and earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in Photography in 1994. - She was presented with Canada’s most prestigious contemporary photography award known as the Grange Prize in 2011.
- The New York Times hailed Gauri ‘as one of India’s most respected photographers’. Furthermore, The Wire called her one of ‘the most thoughtful photographers active in India today’.
- She turned her lens towards her family and friends across the Indian diaspora in America for a series of photographs called The Americans (2000-2007).
- In 2026, Gauri was selected as the winner of the tenth cycle of Prix Pictet and was awarded a prize money of 100,000 Swiss Francs. She was one of 12 photographers shortlisted by an independent jury that also included other prominent names such as Vasantha Yoganathan and Hoda Afshar.
- In 1999, she undertook a decade-long study of marginalized communities in rural Rajasthan and collated her results in Notes from the Desert. Moreover, she has showcased her work in individual exhibitions and projects such as Jannat, The Mark on the Wall, Ruined Rainbow, Balika Mela, and Birth Series.
- In 2010, Gauri curated a major exhibition named Transportraits: Women and Mobility in the City which centered around the safety and experiences of women living on the streets.
- She authored a book titled Balika Mela (2012) which has portraits of female adolescents. Later, she authored 2 more books Acts of Appearance (2026) and Fields of Sight (2026) which focus on her collaborations with rural artists.
- In January 2007, Gauri co-founded and edited a free newsletter called Camerawork Delhi together with Sunil Gupta and Radhika Singh. The newsletter centered around independent photography in and around New Delhi.
- She worked for First City Magazine in New Delhi from 1994 to 1995 and Outlook Magazine in New Delhi from 1995 to 2000.
- In 2026, Gauri was chosen to be the Inaugural Roberta Denning Visiting Artist at her alma mater, Stanford University in California.
