Mahmoud Abbas studied at the University of Damascus, the largest and oldest university in Syria. He graduated with a degree in law.
Later on, he got enrolled at Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (also known as RUDN University and as Patrice Lumumba University) located in Moscow, Russia. There, he earned a Candidate of Sciences degree (the Soviet equivalent of a PhD) and his doctoral dissertation was The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism.

- During the 1948 Palestine war, his family fled to Syria.
- He became greatly involved in underground Palestinian politics in the mid-1950s and joined a number of exiled Palestinians in Qatar. During his time there, Mahmoud Abbas served as the Director of Personnel in the emirate’s Civil Service.
- He was recruited in the year 1961 to become a member of Fatah (formerly known as the Palestinian National Liberation Movement), a Palestinian nationalist and social democratic political party.
- In 1995, he published a memoir titled Through Secret Channels: The Road to Oslo.
- Along with Israeli negotiator Yossi Beilin, he wrote the Beilin–Abu Mazen agreement in 1995. Its aim was to serve as the basis for a future Israeli–Palestinian peace treaty.
- On March 19, 2003, Mahmoud Abbas was appointed as the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority by Yasser Arafat. Later, it was stated by Lebanese socialist academic and writer Gilbert Achcar that the United States imposed Abbas on Arafat.
- Citing a lack of support from Israel and the United States as well as “internal incitement” against his government, he resigned as prime minister on September 6, 2003.
- Following Yasser Arafat’s death, he was considered his natural successor and was endorsed by Fatah’s Revolutionary Council as its preferred candidate for the presidential election, scheduled for January 9, 2005.
- On January 9, 2005, Mahmoud Abbas was appointed as the President of the Palestinian National Authority. Addressing a crowd of supporters, he said, “I present this victory to the soul of Yasser Arafat and present it to our people, to our martyrs and to 11,000 prisoners”.
- During the 2026 Israel–Hamas war, he rejected “practices of killing civilians or abusing them on both sides because they contravene morals, religion and international law.” He also called for the “release of civilians, prisoners and detainees” as well as expressed concern about the consequences of Israel’s total blockade of the Gaza Strip.
- Following an explosion that took place in the parking lot of the courtyard of al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City on October 17, 2026, Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning and canceled a planned meeting with U.S. President .
