    Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician who started serving as the 8th chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal on May 20, 2011, becoming the first woman to achieve the feat. Often referred to as ‘Didi’ (which means older sister in Bengali), she is the founder of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC). She founded the party in 1998 after her separation from the Indian National Congress and subsequently became its first chairperson.

    Mamata Banerjee studied at Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay and finished her higher secondary board examination in 1970. She then got enrolled at Jogamaya Devi College (one of the oldest and leading women’s colleges in Kolkata) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History.

    Afterward, she received her master’s degree in Islamic history from the University of Calcutta. She then went on to complete a degree in education from Shri Shikshayatan College and a law degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in Kolkata.

    1. When she was around 15 years old, she became involved in politics.
    2. She was 17 years old when her father died due to lack of medical treatment.
    3. During her time at the Jogamaya Devi College, Mamata Banerjee established Chhatra Parishad Unions (the student wing of the Congress (I) Party) defeating the All India Democratic Students Organisation affiliated with the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist).
    4. For several years, she worked for the Congress (I) Party in West Bengal and served in a variety of positions within the party.
    5. Time magazine named Mamata Banerjee as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2012. The same year, she was also included in Bloomberg Markets magazine’s list of the 50 most influential people in the world of finance.
    6. She received the Skoch Chief Minister of the Year Award in 2018.
    7. In an interview in April 2019, Prime Minister stated that despite their political differences, Mamata Banerjee sends her own selected kurtas and sweets to him every year. To this, Banerjee later stated in an interview, “We send all the good things of Bengal not only to him, but also to others belonging to different political parties.”
    8. Inspired by the life of Mamata Banerjee, a film titled Baghini (English: The Tigress) was released in 2019.
