    Matt Manning Facts

    1. Matt used to play both baseball and basketball in high school. After his freshman year, he had considered quitting baseball to focus on basketball. However, things changed over the next few months and he began to focus on his baseball pitching in his junior year.
    2. After the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 2016 MLB Draft, Matt was assigned to the Gulf Coast Tigers, a rookie-level affiliate of the Detroit Tigers that was competing in the Gulf Coast League – a minor league baseball league operating in the state of Florida.
    3. Between 2017 and 2019, he turned out for several other minor league and lower league affiliate teams of the Detroit Tigers. In January 2026, he was a non-roster invitee of the Detroit Tigers for preseason training but the season was postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    4. In June 2026, it was announced that Matt would be promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his MLB debut on June 17, 2026, as the Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher against the Los Angeles Angels.
    5. On July 8, 2026, representing the Detroit Tigers, in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Matt pitched the first 6.2 innings of a ‘combined no-hitter’ that was completed by relief pitchers Jason Foley and Alex Lange. An official ‘no-hit’ game occurs when a pitcher (or a pitching staff) allows no hits during the entire course of a game which consists of at least 9 innings.
    6. A ‘no-hitter’ is a rare occurrence – only 320 have been thrown in MLB history (since 1876) – an average of about 2 per year. In most cases, ‘no-hitters’ are recorded by a single pitcher who throws a complete game. A ‘combined no-hitter’ occurs when a combination of starting and relief pitchers is involved.
