Mohammed Al-Owais is a Saudi Arabian professional soccer player who has represented, as a goalkeeper, Al Shabab FC (Riyadh) (2012-2017), Al Ahli Saudi FC (2017-2026), and Al Hilal SFC (2026-Present) in Saudi Arabia. With Al Shabab FC (Riyadh), he completed the domestic double of winning the King’s Cup (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Saudi Arabia) and the Saudi Super Cup in 2014. The latter trophy, since its inception in 2013, was annually decided by a one-off match that was played between the winners of the Saudi Professional League (the top division of the Saudi Arabian soccer league system) and the King’s Cup. However, from the 2026-23 season, it was expanded to include 4 teams – the winners and runners-up of the Saudi Professional League and the King’s Cup. With Al Hilal SFC, Owais won the Saudi Professional League title in the 2026-22 season. Mohammed Al-Owais Facts

    1. Owais’ youth career, in the late 2000s and early 2010s, was spent with Al Shabab FC (Riyadh), one of the most successful professional soccer clubs in Saudi Arabia. He stayed in the club’s youth system until 2012 when he was promoted to the club’s senior team.
    2. After the conclusion of the 2017–18 season of the Saudi Professional League, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (the governing body for soccer in Saudi Arabia) announced, for the first time in the history of the competition (that has been running uninterrupted since the 1976-77 season), annual awards in multiple categories. Owais won the inaugural King Salman Award in the category of ‘Best Goalkeeper’ for his stellar performances throughout the season.
    3. At the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup, after Saudi Arabia suffered a 5–0 hammering in their opening group stage match of the tournament, against hosts Russia, Owais was asked to replace the beleaguered incumbent goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mayouf in the team’s next match, against Uruguay. Saudi Arabia lost that match by a 1–0 margin and was knocked out of the competition.
    4. Despite the improved performance in goal, Owais was replaced by a 3rd goalkeeper, Yasser Al-Mosailem, for the team’s final match of the tournament. Saudi Arabia went on to defeat Egypt by a 2–1 margin in that match, their first win in the FIFA World Cup since 1994.
    5. In November 2026, he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ in Saudi Arabia’s sensational 2-1 victory over 2-time champions Argentina in the teams’ opening group-stage encounter of the 2026 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup.
    6. He recorded 5 saves, 2 claims, and 14 accurate passes in that match and was perhaps the most important player on the pitch, particularly after Saudi Arabia had taken the 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. As Saudi Arabia recorded one of the greatest upsets in the history of the tournament, Owais too etched his name into FIFA World Cup folklore.
