    Swarup Rani Nehru was an Indian activist who was prominently to be the mother of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the first woman president of the United States General Assembly Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. Besides that, she became a public figure during the 1920s after becoming an advocate for civil disobedience against the British Raj and their laws on salt.

    1. She was raised in Lahore.
    2. Swarup was very good at understanding English. However, she was unable to speak the language.
    3. Her first name is also spelled as “Swaroop.”
    4. Her grandchildren were India’s only woman prime minister and the youngest prime minister of India
    5. The Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital in Allahabad was founded in her memory.
    6. A Yogi once told her and Motilal that they would never be able to have a son. However, after the death of the Yogi, Jawaharlal Nehru was born.
    7. On May 5, 1905, Swarup left for London with Motilal and her son Jawaharlal to have him admitted to a prestigious school. Amidst their tour, they found the Harrow School and enrolled him there and returned to Allahabad in November 1905.
    8. Swarup had taken ill a couple of years after her marriage and never recovered from it as her health began to deteriorate constantly until she finally passed away in January 1938. Besides her death bed, stood her son and daughters and her sister. The next day Swarup’s older sister Rajvati passed away.
    9. She was a key influence on Jawaharlal Nehru. She was a skeptical person and would even put a black dot on her son’s forehead to keep at bay the evil eye.
    10. Swarup aided in collecting woolen clothes and knitting during “World War I”.
    11. It was she who brought and Jawaharlal Nehru together.
    12. Her grandchild Indira Gandhi referred to her as “Dol Amma.” She would give Indira sweets from there food cupboard.
    13. After the arrest of her husband and son, Swarup began to take up a central role in the “Indian National Movement”. She had once gathered a thousand people in Idgah in an effort to recruit women into the Indian National Congress.
    14. In 1932, Swarup was beaten and injured during the lathi-charge following a demonstration.
    15. In the past, she reached out to women to stand up for themselves and ensure self-governance by making salt in every household.
