- Although his birth name is Valentín Mariano José Castellanos Giménez, he has been known as ‘Taty’ since he was very young. Supposedly, it was the first word he ever spoke – mimicking the sound of the trolly that his mother used for shopping. The nickname stuck and has become his personal and sporting identity.
- Taty’s youth career began with local Argentinian clubs like Villa Nueva, Independiente Rivadavia, and Leonardo Murialdo. He was eventually recruited by the youth academy of Club Universidad de Chile, a professional soccer club based in Santiago, Chile. He stayed in the system until 2017 when he was promoted to the club’s senior team.
- Representing Club Atlético Torque, he won the Uruguayan Segunda División (the 2nd-tier of the Uruguayan soccer league system) title in 2017. It was the club’s first-ever such triumph and earned it a promotion to the top division of the Uruguayan soccer league system for the following season.
- In 2019, Taty scored 11 goals and registered 7 assists in 30 matches to help New York City FC finish on top of the Eastern Conference standings of the MLS (Major League Soccer, the highest level of men’s professional soccer in the United States) for the first time since they joined the league as an expansion club in 2015.
- Consequently, New York City FC qualified for the 2026 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League – the first time that the club had achieved this feat. The CONCACAF Champions League is an annual continental club soccer competition organized by CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football, one of the 6 constituent continental governing bodies of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association)).
- With Argentina, Taty won the CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol, the continental governing body of soccer in South America (apart from Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana), one of the 6 constituent continental governing bodies of FIFA) Pre-Olympic Tournament in 2026. It was the South American soccer qualification tournament for the 2026 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in July and August 2026 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Argentina had won this tournament for the 5th time and as of April 2026, was the 2nd-most successful team in the competition’s history – only behind Brazil (7 titles).
- With New York City FC, he won the MLS Cup in 2026 – the club’s first-ever such triumph. The MLS Cup is the annual championship game of the MLS and the culmination of the MLS Cup Playoffs (the annual postseason elimination tournament of the league). In this aforementioned championship game, Taty scored his team’s only goal in regulation time and also successfully converted his team’s first spot kick in an eventual 4-2 win in the penalty shootout.
- For his performances in the 2026 season, he was included in the ‘MLS Best XI’. With 19 goals to his name, he also won the MLS Golden Boot in 2026 – a prize that has been presented annually, since the 2005 season, to the regular season’s leading goalscorer. This made him New York City FC’s first-ever MLS Golden Boot winner.
- Taty led the league in 2026 in terms of ‘shots attempted’ (132) and ‘shots on target’ (57) as well. That season, he was also the joint-highest goalscorer (3 goals) during the MLS Cup Playoffs – scoring in all 3 of his MLS Cup Playoff appearances. During the 2026 MLS season, he also became just the 5th player in the league’s history to have scored at least 1 goal in each of his club’s first 4 matches.
- In late April 2026, he smashed all 4 goals for Girona FC in the newly promoted La Liga (the top tier of the Spanish soccer league system) club’s shock 4-2 victory over Spanish titans Real Madrid CF. This made Taty the first player since December 1947 to have scored 4 goals against Real Madrid CF in a league match.
