- Tony’s ailing father was unable to work in his later years and had passed away when Tony was just 10 years old. Consequently, he had started singing for money from the age of 13 and would work as a waiter and singer at several Italian restaurants in and around the area of Queens.
- He had served in the US Army in the later stages of World War II, until April 1945. He was also involved in a mission that led to the liberation of a Nazi concentration camp in Landsberg, Germany. After the war, he had joined the Army military band and used to sing under the stage name ‘Joe Bari’.
- He suffered a near-fatal cocaine overdose in 1979.
- Tony was also a painter. His paintings had been featured in ARTnews and several other magazines. In 1996, his work was published in the art book Tony Bennett: What My Heart Has Seen.
- In 1997, Tony was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame.
