Umar Akmal is a Pakistani professional cricketer who has represented his country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as a middle-order batsman and an occasional wicket-keeper. In the Pakistani domestic circuit, he has played for regional, provincial, and departmental teams such as Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (2007-2017), Lahore Lions (2008-2015), Balochistan (2016, 2019), Punjab (2017), United Bank Limited (2017-18), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (2018), Habib Bank Limited (2018-19), and Central Punjab (2019–2026) across all 3 formats. A rare occurrence in modern cricket, he has also played domestic cricket outside of his home country representing teams such as Wayamba United (2012) in Sri Lanka and Leicestershire County Cricket Club (2015-2016) in England. A bright young talent whose career has been marred by numerous off-field and on-field controversies, Umar is often cited as the brightest star in Pakistan whose talent has been lost to the world due to personal indiscipline and poor player management on part of the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board).

    Umar Akmal Facts

    1. Umar had produced a knock of 129 runs on his test match debut, against New Zealand, in Dunedin, in November 2009. This had made him just the 2nd Pakistani player to score a test match hundred on debut away from home.
    2. He had also become the first Pakistani batsman to score both his maiden Test and ODI hundreds away from home.
    3. An aggressive batsman in the middle order, he has been featured in franchise-based T20 leagues around the world, turning out for Barbados Tridents (2013), Guyana Amazon Warriors (2015), and Trinbago Knight Riders (2016) in the CPL (Caribbean Premier League); Chittagong Vikings (2015) and Rajshahi Kings (2016) in the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League); and Lahore Qalandars (2016-2019) and Quetta Gladiators (2019-2026) in the PSL (Pakistan Super League).
    4. In April 2026, the PCB had banned him from all cricket for 3 years, after he had pled guilty to failing to report corrupt approaches. In July 2026, the ban was reduced to 18 months. In February 2026, the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) had reduced the ban to 12 months and had imposed a fine of USD 27k.
