Virat Singh is an Indian professional cricketer who has played for his home state of Jharkhand (2014–Present) across all 3 formats, as a top-order batsman, in the Indian domestic circuit. In the IPL (Indian Premier League), he has turned out for Sunrisers Hyderabad (2026–Present). A teen prodigy, he had first come into the spotlight during the 2012–13 season of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (the premier limited-overs domestic competition for men’s under-19 cricket in India) where he had made his debut for the Jharkhand under-19s at the age of just 14. He was the leading run-scorer for Jharkhand, and the 8th-highest overall, in the 2019-20 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India’s premier domestic T20 cricket competition), scoring 343 runs in 10 matches at an average of 57.16 and a stellar strike rate of 142.32. This performance had gone a long way in helping him earn selection for the IPL.

    Virat Singh Facts

    1. Virat’s father had enrolled him and his older brother Vishal in the Jharkhand Cricket Academy after getting fed up with his sons regularly smashing windowpanes while playing backyard cricket.
    2. He had made his debut for the Jharkhand under-19s in the 2012–13 season of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and was the 3rd-highest scorer for his team with 152 runs in 5 matches while his brother Vishal was the 2nd-highest run-getter for the team with 179 runs. Virat had also top-scored in Jharkhand’s quarter-final loss to Maharashtra in the tournament.
    3. He had played a vital role in Jharkhand’s progress to the semi-final stage in the 2013–14 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (India’s premier domestic one-day cricket competition), scoring 2 half-centuries – 76 against Bengal and 53 against Assam.
    4. Throughout 2014 and 2015, he was gearing up to break into the India Under-19 squad with an aim to participate in the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup. However, a bout of appendicitis, late in the preparatory phase, had put paid to his hopes.
    5. Following his exploits in the 2019-20 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was on the radar of several IPL franchises including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals. At a trial with the first of those franchises, he had smoked 4 sixes and 4 fours in a slog-overs (the phase of play between overs 14 and 20 of a batting inning) training scenario and had helped successfully chase down a target of about 70 runs in 6 overs.
    6. Influenced by this performance, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab were involved in a bidding war to secure his services at the 2026 IPL Auctions. He was eventually signed up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 1.9 Crores.
